November 19, 2017 - Nashville, TN, U.S. - 19 November 2017 - Mel Tillis, country music star who wrote hits for Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs and many others, and overcame a stutter to sing on dozens of his own singles, has died at the age of 85. The suspected cause of death is respiratory failure. Tillis, the father of country singer Pam Tillis, recorded more than 60 albums and had more than 30 top 10 country singles, including ''Good Woman Blues,'' ''Coca Cola Cowboy'' and ''Southern Rain.'' MEL TILLIS (born Lonnie Melvin Tillis, August 8, 1932 - November 19, 2017) was an American country music singer and songwriter. His biggest success occurred in the 1970s, with a long list of Top 10 hits including 'I Ain't Never', 'Good Woman Blues', and 'Coca-Cola Cowboy'. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts, and the Country Music Association Awards' most coveted award, 'Entertainer of the Year'. Tillis was known for his speech impediment, which didn't affect his singing voice.
