Buddhists light bundles of joss sticks at a coal bassin on the compounds of the Jade-Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China, 2006. The Jade-Buddha Temple in Shanghai was built in 1832, in order to host two Buddha statues made of jade, which had been brought from Burma by a monk called Huigen. Tourists look at rock carvings in the rocky gorge of the famous ancient ruin site Petra in southern Jordan, 16 April 2006. Since 169 BC Petra was the capital of the Nabataean empire, since 106AD the capital of the Roman province Arabia, in the 3rd century AD of Munizipium, in the 4th century AD bishop's see. After this it was trading place in the caravan trade and was deserted after the conquest by the Arabs (629-632). It was rediscovered by J. L. Burckhardt. Since 1929 excavations revealed numerous witnesses of Nabataean architecture. The Nabataean buildings were declared a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Photo: Horst Ossinger.
